Club Induction & Pool Safety Event

All adult members are inducted upon joining and complete a refresher every 3 years. The induction session is designed to emphasize the club’s safety culture and the role every member has in accident prevention and enforcing our Pool Safety Requirements (PSR).

It provides the member with the information about our premises, pool, safety equipment and ensures they are aware of their responsibilities, liabilites and obligations to deliver the alternative lifeguard measures and enforce the PSR as part of their terms and conditions of membership.

Upon completion the member is assessed and to pass they must adequately demonstrate they know

  • the location and how to use the safety and emergency equipment
  • how to respond to an emergency
  • how to recognise the signs and symptoms of drowning and hyperthermia
  • the requirements described in the PSR to an adequate standard and and how to reference it when they need to clarify a particular requirement.
  • standard of behaviour expected by our members and if they cannot comply with the PSR or behave or allow their children to behave in an anti-social manner their access to the pool will be revoked and their membership may be suspended or cancelled

Swimmer Competency Test

The Swimmer Competency Test requires the member to demonstrate they are a competent and capable swimmer as defined by the criteria published in the Pool Safety Requirements and they can comfortably and confidently:

  • Swim a length of the pool on their front using breaststroke or front crawl
  • Swim a length of the pool on their back
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Float in the resting position on their back
  • Enter and exit the water safely

Swimmer members usually are assessed immediately following their induction but they can opt to be assessed as a later date as long as it is completed when they first use the pool. In this case the swimmer member must arrange for another adult member to assess them. Diver, Snorkeler and UWH player members are assessed as part of their qualification or training session.

How to record a member’s Swimmer Competency

The swim assessor can be any adult member who witnessed another member demonstrate the competent and capable swimmer requirements. Members cannot be their own swim assessor, meaning self assessment is not permitted.

It is the responsibility of the person being assessed to check their membership profile has been updated by their assessor.

The assessor will record the results of the swim assessment on the membership profile of the person they assessed.

Falsifying assessment records or misrepresenting a member’s swimming competency is a major safety violation. Such actions are classified as gross misconduct and will result in instant termination of the membership of the persons involved.
